When the world sucks

May 31, 2020 - Leah Neaderthal

Hey.

When you love what you do, it’s easy to want to immerse yourself in your business. To disappear into client work, or your website messaging, or coming up with new programs, and ignore everything else.

And yet, our businesses exist in a larger world that we can’t ignore. And right now, the world we live in is heartbreaking. George Floyd, Minneapolis, and so many more…

If you have a sensitive bone in your body, it’s easy to wonder, “How can I focus on my business when there’s so much awfulness going on in the world?”

So I want to share something I wrote after the Kavanaugh Supreme Court appointment (remember when we thought things couldn’t get worse?). It rings just as true now, about WHY it’s important to continue to get new clients, even when the world sucks.

This week we saw a white woman call the cops on a black man who was birdwatching, knowing full well that by simply alleging “he’s attacking me”, she would be believed and he would not. And we saw a black man die on camera at the hands of a white man whose job is to protect people.

Before that, it was the video of Amaud Arbery getting killed for jogging. The week before that, another instance. And before that, another.

Black people can’t safely read a book in their own car (Keith Scott), be in their own apartment (Botham Jean and Atatiana Jefferson), sleep in their own bed (Breonna Taylor), go to church (The Charleston 9), walk down the street (Trayvon Martin), play with a toy (Tamir Rice), or apparently, look at birds…

…without being antagonized, met with brutality that results in fatalities, or simply outright killed. And these are just some of the ones that we’re aware of. There are thousands of others.

It’s easy to say, “This isn’t us.” But the truth is, it is us. It always was us. It’s not getting worse, it’s just getting filmed.*

And now we’re seeing what happens when you ignore, silence, deny, brutalize, and kill people for generations. The voices of the unheard are making themselves heard.

And this? What’s going on now in cities across the country? It’s our fault.

We have had more opportunities than we can count — years worth of opportunities — to demand the end of this injustice. Our elected leaders have had years worth of opportunities to do something about it. The people that those leaders appoint, they have had more than enough opportunities too.

We all need to do better. As a white woman, I need to do better.

By advocating hard against injustice at all levels. Voting with my dollars more often, as well as with my vote. Studying this chart and seeing what acts I am guilty of overlooking, and committing to calling out all of it when I see it. Having tough conversations.

I want to say to the women of color who are reading this: I’m sorry for the pain and you are experiencing (and have experienced countless times.) I’m sorry we keep failing you.

Many of you will be nodding your head right now, but in case you’re someone who’s thinking, “don’t bring politics into business,” I have news for you: politics affects every business, and how you run your business, every single day. And big companies and industry associations spend huge sums lobbying to make it easier to do their business.

As a business owner, just look at how you’re taxed, who you can hire, how you get healthcare, or how PPP loans are distributed. Politics is already in business.

And politics is already here, in my coaching practice.

Having a point of view that black lives matter is no more political than a point of view encouraging women empowerment, helping women achieve financial independence, or saying that LGBTQ people should have equal rights. My coaching practice already was political, it just might not have been the type of political you like.

But back to why we’re here.

—-

It can be hard to stay focused on work when the world is burning. It can be hard to continue to build your business when it seems like other things are more important.

That’s why I thought it’s the right time to remind us all of WHY it’s important to continue to get new clients, even when the world sucks.

Here’s the piece I wrote.

—-

Why you need to get new clients (even when the world sucks)

Originally published after the Kavanaugh Supreme Court appointment.

If you’re anything like me, the past couple of weeks have been pretty tough. Hell, the past 19 months have been pretty terrible. (UPDATE: now 40 months)

But especially the past several days, with news that makes us question who we are as a country, and the near-constant assault on our collective humanity.

So in the face of all this, you might think, “How could I even focus on learning how to get new clients when the world feels like it’s going to shit?”

If you feel this way, you’re not alone. Even I feel it, and I’m the one teaching this stuff.

But here’s why I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing, even when everything sucks.

Reason #1: Because we need to control what we can.

Right now, so much feels out of our control. And in the face of that, we need to control what we can. And for us business owners, that means our businesses.

We can do great work. We can make a difference in our client’s worlds. We can find fulfillment in practicing our craft, whatever our craft may be. We can put our personal philosophy out into the world.

And to do that, we need clients. And not just clients that are ‘good enough’. We need the ones that fuel our soul. Because when the world feels like it’s going to shit, and our soul feels empty, we need to fill it up however we can.

That’s why I’m going to keep teaching you exactly how to get new clients that you want for your business. There’s enough out there to make you feel frustrated, just scroll Facebook for 10 seconds. Getting new clients shouldn’t be frustrating too.

Reason #2: Because I want you to make a shitload of money.

That’s right. Tons. Because I want you — all of us — to donate to the causes, organizations, and candidates we care about. If you’ve been hanging out in, “I don’t need to make that much money”-land, it’s time to move out and move up.

That’s why I’m committed to teaching you how to get paid bigger numbers for every. single. client. project.

My student Marcia raised her prices 66%, Allyson doubled her fees, and Megan tripled her price for her latest gig… and in each case, the clients said yes. This is what we’re talking about. Money is power, and we all need more of it.

(UPDATE: Last week, one of my SIGNED students just signed a 6-figure contract for a six-month project. That’s what I’m talking about.

When you can make more money, you can support the causes you care about, help elect the leaders you care about and create the world you want to see.

That’s why this week I’ve made donations to The George Floyd Memorial Fund to honor George Floyd’s memory, The National BailOut Project, to free people whose only reason for staying in jail is not having enough disposable income, and Amy McGrath of Kentucky so she can unseat Mitch McConnell in the upcoming election.)

Reason #3: Because we are in this together.

When I’m scared, my natural inclination is to clam up and close off. But that’s not what we need right now. We need to be here for each other. With each other.

So that’s why I’m committed to showing up for you, with you. To help you get the clients you want, so you can do the work you want, so you can make the money you want. So in this time of utter craziness, your business becomes your happy place. The place where you can effect change.

I’ll be with you in the Facebook group. I’ll be with you step-by-step in the programs I offer.

I hope you’ll be with me too. Because none of us is going to get through this alone. But we are going to get through it.

The opportunity in front of you

May 25, 2020 - Leah Neaderthal

The Great Reset. The Great Re-evaluation. The Pause. We’ve got all kinds of names for the past few weeks.

As I’ve been going through the various cycles of it, something feels strangely familiar to me.

Not the actual pandemic part of it, or the social distancing, or the masks.

But the feeling that this is a time to slow down. To pause. To re-evaluate things. To focus on what’s important.

And then I realized why it felt similar. Because it reminded me of 2016, when I had my own Great Reset.

That’s the year that I had a stroke.

Let me back up.

I had started a new business a year earlier (after walking away from several projects I’d been heavily invested in for the five years before), and I was all in.

I had made it my mission to help every woman learn how to sell, so they could go from “hating the sales part” to confidently landing higher-paying clients.

I was working crazy hours coaching students 1:1, doing client work, and giving 250% of myself to everyone else.

I didn’t sleep all that well. I didn’t take care of myself at all.

My wife and I, my fiancée at the time, argued about how much time I was spending working.

I didn’t eat well, rarely exercised, and focused solely on my students and clients. I had a clear vision of what I wanted my coaching practice and business to look like, and I prioritized that over everything else.

Then, one morning when I was making coffee, my vision became blotchy. I couldn’t feel half my face. I didn’t know where I was. I couldn’t cry for help, and within seconds, I felt like the entire, right side of my body was gone.

I was rushed to the hospital where, after a multitude of tests, they found that I had had a stroke.

I was 36 years old.

People don’t have strokes at age 36 unless something is very wrong.

Recovery took time, but thankfully I recovered. I had to work through some deficits, including difficulty with word-finding (Imagine knowing what you want to say, but you just can’t find the words. Every. Single. Time.). And when I was back to “myself,” I had to do some real soul-searching.

I had to pause. Reset. Examine my life and determine what matters. Decide to make myself and my health a priority even if that meant turning down a client or coaching fewer students.

I had to admit, out loud, “I can’t go on the way I was before.”

So what we’re doing right now feels eerily familiar to me.

Pause. Reset. Examine my life and determine what really matters. My health. My wife. Our son. My business.

Be honest about what I can feasibly take on, and what I need to say no to.

Pause.

Reset.

Examine your life, and determine what really matters to you.

Your health.

Your family.

Your business.

It’s okay to walk away from projects that aren’t the best fit, so that you make the time and space for the ones that are.

It’s okay to see this as an opportunity to choose one way to grow your business, and de-prioritize the rest.

It’s okay, as a student in this class of SIGNED decided, to not hustle while she’s doing full-time childcare, and instead be in “idea mode” until daycare opens again in July.

What is one thing you can take away from this experience that will make your life better in the long run?

To your health — and your success,

Leah

If you’re thinking about rebranding… try this instead

May 11, 2020 - Leah Neaderthal

Hey! Really quick – this week, I’m hosting a LIVE workshop on how to position your services as a painkiller (a must-have) and not a vitamin (nice to have), and there are a few spots left. To book your spot for Friday, May 15th from 1-3pm EST, click here!

—

She told me, “I feel like, even before all this, I wasn’t getting that many consulting clients. But now…. Now I really want to use this downtime to figure this out.”

I said, “Awesome! What’s the first thing you’re going to do?”

She responded, “I need to do a rebrand.”

I wanted to dive through our Zoom call to (gently) shake her.

She was one of my students, and I could see her rapidly falling into the trap that so many have before her….

The trap that convinces you that you aren’t getting clients because you need an entirely new brand.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this from a student…. well, you know the rest.

—

Over the past several weeks, I’ve been telling everyone I possibly can:

The most valuable thing you can do right now is to make sure that your work is an absolute must-have for your clients.

To shift your services from vitamins (services that are nice to have but easy to put off) to painkillers (solutions to acute and critical problems).

And the good news is you absolutely do not need to “rebrand” to make this shift.

You can position your brand as a painkiller with a few simple word choices. Some message tweaks.

But it can’t be done with buzzwords or jargon, or only talking about what you do.

Going from vitamin to painkiller is simple. But it isn’t easy. It takes a specific, strategic approach.

That’s precisely why I’m hosting a live Painkiller Workshop – so we can work through these changes together. So you can get feedback in real-time, and see how other women running b2b consulting businesses are doing this, as well.

And so you can walk away after an afternoon, ready to attract clients who NEED you and are ready to hire you.

No major “rebrand” needed.

This LIVE 2-hour Painkiller Workshop is happening this Friday, May 15th.

When I first announced the Painkiller Workshop, it was only open to my Pack Your Pipeline and SIGNED students. The response was so great that we’ve decided to open this one to you as well…and we’re offering a discounted rate of $149 (normally $249).

Here are those details again:

Turn your service from vitamin to painkiller

A downloadable workbook and workshop recording will be provided to everyone who registers.

Please don’t “rebrand” right now. Or just accept this as a “slow season.” You can absolutely be serving your clients, solving their problems, and growing your consulting business right now.

I’m rooting for you while you do.

See you in the workshop,

Leah

They have advice for you

May 4, 2020 - Leah Neaderthal

Hey, I’m going to keep this short.

Because I’m not really the one with a message for you today. I’ve been hearing from many of you that you’re feeling a little nervous right now.

So I invited some women who have been running their consulting and coaching businesses for a very long time, to share some thoughts with you.

These women have successfully run their businesses through all kinds of economic climates, world events, and personal trials. They KNOW what it takes to navigate downturns and uncertain situations, and how you absolutely CAN do this.

They generously are sharing their advice and encouragement for you in this video.

Do you know another woman consultant or coach who could use this advice? Please share this video!

Listen in on a coaching session (podcast sneak peek!)

April 26, 2020 - Leah Neaderthal

Hey! Really quick – next week, I’m hosting a LIVE training about how to get B2B consulting clients, even if selling is your weakness (and even if it feels weird to sell right now). There are two dates to choose from – scroll to the end to choose your session and reserve your spot. See you there!

—

Hi… we decided to throw out the agenda.

It was six weeks ago. It was one of the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, the week that I think we all kind of started to realize how serious this was.

It was also Week 5 of our SIGNED coaching program, and we were supposed to talk about how to lead a potential client down the sales process in a way that’s really effective and without feeling pushy.

But in the coaching call, instead of going ahead with our scheduled topics, I asked the women in the group what was on their mind.

The conversation that followed was so incredible, about how to really show up for our clients and for ourselves in light of everything going on.

So incredible, that I’ve made the recording available for you to listen in on.

Now, normally I wouldn’t share recordings of conversations from SIGNED because it’s a really intimate small group program.

And on these calls we talk about real stuff. Real potential clients that students are currently talking to, real actual clients, real numbers, and we solve real problems and work through real things that are going on in everyone’s business and even personal lives.

So the recordings of these calls are shared only with the students in that class and kind of locked away in a vault that’s only accessible to them forever.

But after this call, I came back to the members of this class and I asked them if they’d be okay with me sharing this call with you. And they graciously said yes.

So what you’re going to hear is the conversation we had that day. With some key parts removed according to each student’s request.

This also happens to be a sneak peek of my new podcast, Leads to Clients.

And you can listen to it all right here.

I hope you enjoy it: not only will you get to listen in on how other business owners are dealing with and growing through a global crisis and uncertain market, I’ll also come back at the end of the episode to talk through a lesson from that call that you can apply to your business.

Here’s that link again to listen in.

And, if you’re ready to start landing new clients of your own, even in the midst of an uncertain time, I’d also like to invite you a LIVE free training on How To Land Consulting Clients… Even If Selling Is Your Weakness.

There are two dates to choose from, so you can choose a time that works with your schedule.

Tuesday, April 28th – 12:30 – 1:30pm ET
Thursday, April 30th – 2 – 3pm ET

I’ll teach you the proven system in a no-fluff training that you can take and start using RIGHT AWAY.

Here’s a closer look at what you’ll learn:

The proven, step-by-step system to get the consulting clients you really want (in a way that doesn’t even feel like selling!)
The three things that are actually making it harder for clients to say yes to you (and that you can stop doing right now!).
Why you never have to pitch, cold call, or lower your prices …and what to do instead

Plus, if when you attend live, I’ll be there to answer your questions, AND you’ll get a bonus: my 10 Ways To Follow Up With Prospects (That Don’t Feel Like You’re Being Annoying!) guide… but that’s only available to those who come to one of the live workshops!

In a time that can be isolating, I’m so grateful to you, and to my SIGNED students. I love that we can share our experiences and connect through trainings so we can continue to grow together.

Can we cut the BS? (it’s good for everyone)

April 19, 2020 - Leah Neaderthal

Hey! Really quick – next week, I’m hosting a LIVE training about how to getting B2B consulting clients, even if selling is your weakness. There are two dates to choose from – scroll to the end to choose your session and reserve your spot. See you there!

—

I noticed something this week.

When I get on calls now — with students, clients, team members — we start out by asking, “How are you?”…

And there are two phases of answers. There’s the First Answer we’re all accustomed to: “I’m fine.”

And then there’s a pause and the Second Answer. And that’s the honest one.

Back when all of this started, there was a collective sense of, “Hey, this is new and different and maybe a little bit exciting!” The tools we’ve been using for ages — Zoom, Slack, and so on — were suddenly mainstream. It was… new, and almost fun? maybe? … for a few days.

Adrenaline got us through the first couple of weeks or so.

You probably sprang into action, offering to help your existing clients. You took on a lot — because that’s how you do business. You pulled a few late nights, worked until you felt that pain in your shoulder, and figured you’d get back to your regular routine in a couple of weeks.

Except…

It’s been a month, even longer for many of us. Everyone’s roots have grown out (mine included). And we have no idea how much longer “this” will all go on.

We can’t keep running on adrenaline indefinitely.

But here’s what we can do: We can be honest.

We can answer the “how we’re doing” question with how we’re REALLY feeling, because “Fine” is a lie.

But more importantly, we can face our businesses and see what’s REALLY going on – because when you do that, you can see where to focus, and exactly what you need to do.

And oftentimes it’s not as daunting as you think, because you can actually make a plan.

Maybe your pipeline looks a little bare? We can get on that now.

Maybe clients are feeling a crunch? Figure out what is actually in your power to help with that and make a plan.

Maybe cash flow is looking scary in another month or so? Ok. How many clients do you need to sign to get back on track?

Maybe you haven’t signed a new client recently…and if you’re like a lot of women I talk to, maybe that’s because you haven’t even tried, completely convinced there’s no business or budgets out there right now…

Or maybe you were ALREADY squeamish about selling your services and expertise before…and now that just feels impossible…

I want to show you that you absolutely CAN land clients right now. We have students that are doing it every day (yes, even in the last couple of weeks!).

So here’s what I can do to help:

Next week, I’m hosting a LIVE free training on How To Land Consulting Clients… Even If Selling Is Your Weakness. There are two dates to choose from, Tuesday, April 28th or Thursday, April 30th, so you can choose a time that works with your schedule.

I’ll teach you the proven system in a no-fluff training that you can take and start using RIGHT AWAY.

If you’re ready to stop hiding from how you REALLY feel right now, what’s REALLY going on in your business, and the ACTUAL steps you can take to feel more stable and secure, this workshop will be immensely valuable.

Here’s the info and the links to register.
